Retell Lecture
Notes in two columns — topic words and linking words — then retell in five sentences.
The rule
- 1While listening, write only key nouns and any signposts: firstly, however, as a result.
- 2Open with 'The speaker discussed …'.
- 3Give three main points in the order you heard them.
- 4Close with the speaker's conclusion. Speak for at least 35 of the 40 seconds.
Worked example
A lecture on urban traffic congestion.
- Notes: cars ↑, buses cheap, cycling infra
- Order the three points
- Close with the conclusion
Answer: The speaker discussed urban congestion, focusing on car growth, bus pricing and cycling routes.
Three drills
Drill 1. What should your notes capture?
Drill 2. How should you start?
Drill 3. How many main points is enough?
